Project: Westfield Doncaster Redevelopment
Location: Doncaster VIC
Client: Westfield
Contract Value: $12 million
Project Manager: Graeme Savage
Completion date: November 2008

Since 1969, Westfield Doncaster has been one of Melbourne’s popular shopping complexes, offering food, fashion and entertainment. Located approximately 20 minutes east of the city’s central business district, Westfield comprises over 119,000 square metres of retail space, more than 400 stores and 5,000 parking spaces.  A significant challenge for ACE in undertaking such an expansive project as the Westfield redevelopment was working around existing infrastructure and services. As well as maintaining pedestrian and vehicle access to the shopping centre, it was essential that the bus interchange was operational at all times. Reconstruction of external roads and intersections had to be completed whilst maintaining traffic flow:
Project works included:

  • Car park reconstruction involving bulk excavation and installation of a 200-metre underground concrete encased high voltage cable
  • Construction of large pad footings to support the new structure, as well as shotcrete and retaining walls, and stormwater drainage that incorporated two large detention tanks and gross pollutant traps
  • Other internal works comprising heavy duty pavements, a new bus depot and loading docks, internal roads and coloured pavements, landscaping, road and parking signage, line-marking, and installation of electrical and irrigation conduits
  • External works including lane widening, pavement reconstruction and installation of new traffic signals — all completed whilst maintaining traffic flow

ACE Civil Services managed this fast track design through careful planning, monitoring and adherence to strict deadlines and standards.
