Located 20km southwest of Melbourne, the Cheetham Wetlands consist of lagoons and saltmarsh of varying salinity levels created through the activities of a Saltworks that used to operate in the area. The relatively shallow ponds provide an environment which attracts many birds who like to feed on vegetation, insects, larvae and other small animals both in the water and on the pond floor.

Ace Infrastructure constructed this bike and walking track through these sensitive RAMSAR listed wetlands in a project incorporating:

  • Major earthworks
  • Removal and treatment of acid sulphate soils
  • Gabion basket construction and placement of rock beaching for erosion control
  • Installation of Corten panels and handrails
  • Erection of a 200-metre multi span bridge supported by concrete piles over Skeleton Creek
  • Electrical shutdowns to enable piling works and placement of 10 tonne steel bridge sections under high voltage lines
  • Set up of an exclusion zone to minimise disturbance to nesting migratory birds and to protect cultural heritage
