Waterfront City is located in the heart of Docklands, on the edge of Melbourne’s central business district. Considered one of the largest urban renewal projects in Victoria, Docklands comprises residential housing, pedestrian friendly streets, community gardens, retail outlets, and food and entertainment facilities.  This prominent ACE Landscape project resulted in the transformation of uninviting wasteland and unusable industrial land into a well-lit public space comprising bicycle and walking paths, seating and green space. It is an example of ACE effectively utilising its full range of capabilities to meet a tight 2-month schedule. Works included:

  • Clearing and removal from site of contaminated soil and over 100 dead or weed tree species
  • Importation of new soil and the planting of over 14,000 plants, mainly indigenous varieties, following extensive excavation
  • Construction of nine separate rain gardens (measuring 440 square-metres in total and 1 metre-deep) using over 50 tonne of steel and coloured sandblasted concrete
  • Installation of an extensive water pumping system that delivers 50 litres per second from a central holding tank

Most importantly, the rain gardens serve to purify contaminated water that originally flowed untreated into Moonee Ponds Creek.
