Childs Road Upgrade

ACE successfully delivered the Childs Road Upgrade, transforming a critical transport corridor to enhance traffic flow, boost safety, and improve local connectivity. The project duplicated Childs Road from two to four lanes between Beaumont Crescent and Prince of Wales Avenue.

Key structural works included constructing a new bridge over Darebin Creek, upgrading the existing crossing, and converting the Bowman Drive roundabout into a modern, signalised intersection. ACE also installed a signalised slip lane with pedestrian lights at Dalton Road to protect local foot traffic.

ACE installed a continuous median safety barrier and built premium Shared Use Paths on both sides of the corridor. The comprehensive upgrade was completed with extensive utility relocations, improved drainage systems, new street lighting, crisp road signage, and tailored urban landscaping.

Safety and community needs were integrated throughout.

Project Highlights:

• Opened Childs Road to the public two months ahead of schedule.
• Reconophalt™ Asphalt: Utilised recycled soft plastics, glass, and toner in all road base layers.
• Steel-Free Paths: Reinforced all shared paths using six tonnes of 100% recycled eMesh.
• Coffee Ground Soil: Blended 250,000 lattes’ worth of recycled coffee grounds to nourish 27,000 trees.
• Indigenous Activity Node: Co-designed a unique public space celebrating local Indigenous cultural heritage.
• Creek Engineering: Safely managed Darebin Creek using a custom rock bund, diversion pumps, and pontoons.
